Mobile Technologies
How have mobile and internet communication technologies changed the way we stay in touch with family and friends or develop new forms of intimate relationships in Kuwait?
People started using the Internet and mobiles because of the ease in communication. Now, people are busy in their work and with their families and their children, and thus Technology keeps them in touch with each other easily and smoothly. Through Technology, the person can communicate with others all the time, morning and night, but he can not visit them at night or late. Technology also helps to keep you in touch with your friends and your family all the time, such as BlackBerry that we have these days. In the past, people can not communicate only through visits and seeing each other, but now people can see each other through the Technology through video calls and they are in different regions. Also, the Internet has a big role in this communication even if they were people in different countries. You can see your family and friends and talk to them through electronic conversations (e-talks).
Technology to me is a blessing within a curse. It seems only natural to think that technology would benefit us a great deal, the ability to communicate with whomever whenever seems to be gratifying. But think about quality time, I feel in this epoch we might have lost touch of quality time, time that is well spent. Because of all this abundant amount of technology that helps us stay in touch but not really in touch we tend to romanticize the idea of our closeness to one another. If I am not in front of the person physically then it is not worth it, if this is the cost of technology I do not want it. Indeed new ways of communications have come about, such ways consist of the language that has been shorten a great length in order to cram everything in a message per se, additionally to save time. Time is of the essence in the rapid moving world, so why bother with proper phrases when one can chop them down to make everything smaller and easier to read. People must beware of short cuts, they usually end in nothing but tribulations. Internet has cheapen the cost of communicating worldwide, simply through a click here and there you are able to get in touch with a friend oversees, or within the same area. You can also meet new people, and develop your communication skills in another language if that is of any interest of course. Now the problem is simple, why would you opt to communicate through a phone screen, or pc screen, when you actually can visit the friend that is within your locations? I am all for technology, but we have gotten so lazy and accustomed to it that we re-create and reform every relationship. The way they create intimacy through the usage of technology is rather complex, the usage of electronic symbols or icons can represent how one is feeling, but one must keep in mind that a message written will never be the same as a message spoken. Even if you have a PhD in deciphering non-verbal messages you still can be inclined to misinterpret a message. Now we have a hand full of excuses ready when we do not want to meet with a family member, and through simply calling and sparing some minutes on the phone and talking about so and so, and what you ate.. Etc, you are off the hook, and you no longer need to actually visit. So this creates disunion, when people think they actually are a phone call away.
Mobile technologies were intended to ease the communication and interaction among people, having a mobile means that you can be reached anywhere anytime so is having internet. Skype and similar programs have made it possible to both see and hear a person from the other side f the world. Social networking ( facebook, hi5) allows us to meet and interact with people whom will would probably never meet in our daily lives. Yet there is a flip side to those inventions that were intended to improve our lives. Face to face human contact is replaced by video conferences, personal conversations are text messages. The language used had been altered significantly; instead of actually congratulating a Colleague on their promotion in person, sending a “smiley” face with a kiss is good enough “this can also come in handy if you are not so sincere in your happiness with his/her promotion , no one can tell your tone or see face when you send the text. This technologies can also be used to avoid personal contact, one subscribe to a service that will automatically send text messages to your friends and family on their birthdays. I don’t necessary commiserate the times where we had to actually visit someone in person. In the end it is not the technology itself it the people who use it
Technology is being used as a form of communication between people in these days. People are fully depending on technology and giving importance to internet and cellphones more than meeting people face-to-face which I think is the only way which you can create intimacy, bond and interaction. I think that communication through technology is wrong because this kind of communication doesn't really allow people to express themselves, doesn't show any face expressions or any kind of physical bond between people like for example hugging someone that you haven't seen in a long time or having feelings for someone. I think that communication by technology should be done only in emergencies or when people are unable to reach each other, otherwise people shoud meet each which I think people are not really bonding in this kind of way these days.
Mobile technologies have eased the communication techniques for expatriates in Kuwait. Expats can contact their families and friends in their home countries or who are else living in any other country through skype, chatting programs, mobile text messages, etc. Thus, moving to other countries (Trans nationalism) is much easier than it use to because of the emerged mobile communication technologies. People find it much easier to communicate those who they are away from, In addition, they wouldn’t feel the loneliness resulted from moving to other countries as it use to.
An intimate relationship caused by mobile communication technologies is a different topic. Whether between expatriates or domestic citizens, intimate relationships created thought mobile communication technologies can be formed. Surely, it made it easier for people to communicate, share ideas, and some times fall in love with each other. It’s another way for meeting people you don’t know and share your beliefs with. So it definitely might open up gates for people to interact more and fall in love through their common ideas and beliefs.
One of the main consequences of globalization is the evolution of visual communication and audio. And Kuwait, had followed the path of globalization so it has been through multiple stages of communication starting with homing began homing pigeons, and letters and subsequently the home phone is the mean way of communication and with the development of mobile phone and the internet had become the mean way of communication between people in Kuwait and out side of Kuwait. Mobile technology is important in our life because we can communicate with others specially our family and our friends. During our daily preoccupation with life can communicate with our parents at any time of day, from anywhere, which makes them feel reassured. Our relations with our friends had become stronger because we can communicate with them easier and faster and this increases the intimacy. At the present time and because of the revolution of communications technology and the Internet it has become possible to communicate with family friends who are living abroad or they are out of the country for certain reasons and friends from other counties and this situation will not miss them and they will not feel the way alienation and they will feel that they are still in the country.
Technology has definitely made life easier, before it was difficult to communicate with people. But now it’s just a dial away. It has definitely made it easy for us. Let’s take the internet first, instead of sending fax or posting letters, we now have electronic email which just needs to be sent to whoever we wish to send. We almost have chat rooms like msn or yahoo where people keep in touch. Family abroad can be easily kept in touch through chatting, email or facebook, orkut, hi5. We name it and they have it. All these new inventions of keeping people connected have immerged in the 21st century. Before we would not really know our far cousins, but now taking facebook for example we can not only talk to them but actually see their pictures and stay connected to them. Telephone technology has done us a big favor, it has made life very simple for us. We are more in touch with our family even if they are aboard. Service like blackberry is mostly used for text messaging friends and keeping in touch. All in all it had made relationship with family and friends stronger as we know what everyone is doing or where they live etc. This also causes new relationships. For example a lot of couples meet online through facebook chatting or msn and exchange information and numbers and start to have feelings for each other. In the olden days all this was not possible. Girls could not talk to boys from other part of the world as there was no way of staying connected. But nowadays it different people meet up online and sometimes end up getting married. We can use it for personal and professional purpose as well.

We know have the tiniest and the most smallest mobile phones that are carried around and can be used to call anybody in no seconds time. All we have to do is just dial the number and we are connected. Messaging system through blackberry phones and I phones have made life even simple. We can use the internet and stay connected to people by either calling or messaging. Rationally a guy and girl never get to speak to each other before marriage, but with technology even if the guy is in USA and the girl lives in Kuwait, they can still keep in touch through either internet or phones. Usually people meet their loved ones on line and then they start to get to know each other. Technology had unquestionably made a great impact on us.
With the introduction of modern technology, ways in which people stay in touch has differed greatly. First of all is how parents stay in touch with their children. In comparison with the past, parents now give their children mobile phones to carry around so they can contact them no matter where they are. They are able to reach them at any time anywhere. Also, with the blackberry messenger, or with the watssap application on the iphone, parents can send their children msgs to make sure they are alright. Other forms of technology such as google earth tracker and that sort of thing provide parents with information of their children's exact whereabouts. Friends can also keep in touch with each other this way. The use of internet on mobile phones makes it easy as well because with facebook or msn messenger friends can be in touch all the time.
