Alternative Families

One of the biggest contraversies in Europe and the United States pertaining to family is the same sex marriage. Discuss how same-sex marraige is tied to the intimacy revolution. What alternative family forms do we find in Kuwait. Try to imagine and describe how a same sex marriage debate would be discussed and dealt with in Kuwait.

  1. The past definition and reasons of a relationship are altering. The main reason behind a relationship was to create a family and have kids. The rise of global era, mass technological and communication development, and transnationalism has changed the meaning of a relationship. Firstly, this is because the effect of these factors has transferred the family structure from an extended family to a nuclear family. Secondly, the transformation of families turned from a nuclear family to a single person living with friends or couples living together. Hence, people became more interested in having a partner rather than a whole family of kids, mother, father, grand father, and grand mother, uncles, aunts, etc. So, choosing the right partner became based on sexual and emotional attraction, love and understanding and other things that will can both partners capable in being committed each other. Therefore, the new meaning and reasons of intimacy have changed the perspective of intimate relations. Accordingly, same sex marriages started to appear as one of the reasons of the new perspective of intimate relations.

I believe that same sex marriages are totally prohibited in Kuwait. In addition, I wouldn’t expect that it would be acceptable among Kuwaiti families. This is because one of the reasons of marriage in Kuwait is to bring kids. Another reason is that same sex marriages are totally prohibited under the Islamic law. Therefore, same sex marriages will be unwelcomed phenomena.

  2. Marriage is a relationship between male and female, and their main objective is to find the life partner and to help you to overcome adversity and pressure, which results in having children that can help to produce another generation and so forth. This movement is to get at successive generation after generation. Thus in the marriage of male and female in the legal frame is the natural form of marriage and not inconsistent or incompatible with religion and do not conflict with the instinct and human nature. And important to note that reproduction and having children is one of the most important reasons for marriage and marriage that verifies the male and female.

For the same-sex marriage in Kuwait, it is something totally unacceptable. Kuwait is an Islamic state and Islam has forbidden the relationship between man and man or woman and a woman. Also, the principles of Islamic religion and man-made laws are always placed on what the normal cushions and rare, it is considered abnormal and unacceptable and this is one of the reasons for rejecting this type of relationship. Families in Kuwait has not and will not tolerate this type of relationships in any form. Stayed, and these kinds of people do not receive any welcome by the Kuwaiti society.

  3. Same sex marriages are tied to the intimacy revolution because same-sex relationships are part of the modern westernized fabric of sex and sexuality. Within the medical and mental health fields, homosexuality is no longer listed as some sort of deviant behavior exposed by people. People have come to terms to accepting individuals who seek partners of the same sex...However, one should keep in mind that there are many people out there that will still reject the idea of same sex relationships, or even marriage. Even though one point in time people believe that homosexuality was some sort of disease, people are starting to look at this type of relationship from different perspectives...
Homosexuals like to display their affections openly, it is a little different than people that are heterosexual, and feel ashamed to show their love, or might want to display their affection in confinement. That is how it is tied to the intimacy revolution, because we're seeing people displaying their affection on a whole new level...This is what seems to be suggested...I'm merely stating the obvious, doesn't mean that I agree or not...That is not up to me...

Some of the alternative forms of families consist of divorced children...If parents are not capable of resolving their issues accordingly the mother's family can take of the children, or some solution as such would be implemented...That's how it would work in Kuwait...Now a single women bearing a child is inconceivable, and might be a type of different family in the next few years...But not now.

Because Kuwait is an Islamic country that debate will probably happen behind closed doors, or else this sort of debate would create mayhem all over town...

I might post something else later...I have class so it's a little unorganized..

  4. Same sex marriages can be tied to the intimacy revolution in a sense that the relationship between the two partners is entered for its sake and both parties equally needed and equally powered. The relationship is not entered for the sake of reproduction, economics or social upward mobility. In most cases same sex partner are together simply because of how the partner makes feel and what the relationship contribute to both their satisfaction.
Kuwait with its Islamic identity has very little space that allows any deviation from the norm. Perhaps the somewhat “different” forms would be divorced parents, with children alternating households. Another one that came to acceptance especially after the invasion is single mothers whose husband has been killed or captured. If the opposite exists, the man would be pressured to find a “mother for the children”
A discussion about same-sex marriage as Faye mention only takes place behind closed doors. Sometimes parents or older family members might want to ask questions about homosexuality In Kuwait. However this type of relationship has been discussed as “epidemic” or stigma to the Kuwaiti society in many T.V shows. It has never been heard a show will speak about the discrimination that gays and lesbian face in Kuwait.

  5. The same sex marriage is not allowed in kuwait (even other arab countries)because of mostly religious reasons and also it's destroying the nature of life, the way of life, the way of how people are supposed to live anf form a family. It's turning nature and making it complex for new generations. It is also a way to destro the repution of Kuwait as a country with no control of citizen's actions that are considered against religion. Married people of the same sex will be isolated from other people and they'll be severly judged, they'll also face alot of consequences that could effect their lives and also what they're doing is against islam.

  6. The definition for intimacy has changed over years, where ever we feel loved and wanted we try to build a relationship there and then. It’s not just us but the human nature. Marriages usually do not end up successful because of such reasons as there is no love and affection between the couples. In the Arab society, marriage is all about getting into a relationship and then giving birth. But people know view it differently. One major reason for same sex marriage is the feeling of intimacy toward the same sex partner, who might have gone through the same problems the other partner might have gone through and now both feel that they know each other and care about each other and thus end up getting married.
These marriages cannot be accepted within the Kuwaiti Culture as the religion does not permit it, although such cases do take place but behind doors where we people are not aware of. As it is seen a sign of shame if the people or the Kuwaiti families find out that one member of their family is homosexual. But same sex marriages are not acceptable in the society due to religion, values, culture and tradition.

  7. Firstly, same sex marriages are definitely not acceptable and a contentious topic not only in Kuwait but to many more part of the world which aren’t much modern yet. Legally in Islam law it is not allowed. Talking from the Kuwaiti point of view, when a Kuwaiti family finds out that their child is not straight or is interested in same sex marriage they will not be calm with such a topic in fact for them the name of their family to stay secure is what is their highest priority and therefore in a close society such as ours they will try their level best to hide and keep this thing discrete. However even after all the restriction we still have couples that are secretly married without their families being familiar about this in Kuwait and if they aren’t married then they are secretly in a relationship.
This situation in Kuwait is definitely frowned upon regarding this topic and to my knowledge the westerners do play a huge part in this. For instance, in many countries in the west same sex marriages are allowed and when people in Kuwait see how normal it is out in the west they only get more motivated and encouraged by what they are doing hence making the Kuwaiti people forget their family values and cultures in Kuwait.
